GODLY WOMAN

Every woman is remarkable in the eyes of God. I want to put forward a few questions.

What is God expecting from us? How should a godly woman be?

Here are a few thoughts about godly women in the light of scripture.

Shall we examine ourselves with prayer?

A godly woman will love others more than herself and serve others with happiness. Mother Teresa is an excellent example of a godly woman. A godly woman seeks God always, stays true and humble before God, and serves God faithfully with all her heart.

God expects and searches for certain qualities that please Him. These are inner beauty, obedience to God, avoiding gossip, controlling our tongue, using our words for the Glory of God, and encouraging others.

Here are some verses that talk about these qualities.

  • Proverbs 31 - A Godly woman will love the Lord and be faithful in doing her responsibilities.
  • II Corinthians 10: 5 (b) - A Godly woman will control her thoughts and obey God.
  • Ephesians 4:29 - A Godly woman will avoid unpleasant talk.
  • I Timothy 2:9-10 - A Godly woman will dress modestly and adorn herself with good deeds.
  • 1 Peter 3:2 - A Godly woman lives a life with reverence and purity.
  • Proverbs 31:30 – A Godly woman focuses on her inner self rather than outer beauty.

Mary Magdalene

(Matthew 27: 56, 61; 28: 1; Mark 15: 40, 47, 16: 1, 9; Luke 8: 2, 24: 10; and John 19: 25, 20: 1, 11, 18)

Mary Magdalene was a sinner, rejected by all. When she met God, her life changed, and she was relieved of her sins. Even then, she would have faced abuse in her life, and people would have accused her of her past life, but not once did she go back to her sins. She valued her precious calling and served God earnestly. In our lives, too, we might be accused by others of something we did in the past. Don’t worry about those who discourage you and go forward with God’s strength.

Ruth

(Ruth 1 - 4)

Ruth was a woman of unwavering faith and had a humble heart. She loved her family and was willing to go with her mother-in-law to a new place without worrying about her future. She was humble and obedient to her mother-in-law. Families are given by God. Even if the members do not understand our struggles and weaknesses or blame us for everything, don’t lose heart. God will honor us if we are good to our family and in-laws.

Hannah

(1 Samuel 1:2 – 2:21)

Hanna is known for Truthfulness. She was barren for many years and prayed for a son. She earnestly prayed that she will give her son to God’s work if He blesses her womb. God heard her cry and blessed her with a son. True to her word, she gave her son to God’s work. Many a times, we fail to fulfill the covenants we make with God once our prayers are answered. God wants us to be truthful to Him. Do not make covenants that cannot be fulfilled.

  • Priscilla (Acts 18, Romans 16: 3&4, 2 Timothy 4:19)

Priscilla is a committed Christian. She is a beautiful example of a holy woman in the Bible. Along with her husband, Aquila, she dedicated her life to God. They had a reputation for excellent ministry and generosity to those in need. Many people want to engage in ministry with their spouses, but not all spouses are really supportive. We must pray fervently for God to use our spouses to serve others. Stay true to your calling.

  • Rahab (Joshua 2, Matthew 1:5):

Rahab is recognized for her hospitality. She was an unlikely candidate to become a God's servant who favored God's people. She provided shelter and protection to God's people despite the fact that her life would be jeopardized if her people discovered she was assisting them. She didn't think about herself and instead made room in her home for God's people. Serving God's people is a wonderful thing to do. It will gain favor with God. What we do for God will be returned to us.

Women who were Ungodly

  1. Salome (Matthew 14:1-11)

In the 1st century Palestine, she was the royal princess of the Herodian dynasty. She was a lovely, intelligent young lady who could dance well. “Dance of the Seven Veils” was her name. She is the one who danced for Herod and was responsible for the beheading of John the Baptist. When compared to the rest of God's feminine creation, women are beautiful. God has bestowed numerous gifts. The question is, “Are we using it for God’s glory or to ruin God’s people?”

  • Queen Jezebel (1 Kings 21:1-16)

Queen Jezebel was the Queen of Israel but was not faithful to God. She plotted and killed Naboth, who refused to give his vineyard, which was an inheritance from God, to His people. She used her power to kill a God-fearing man. But God was with Naboth, and when Jezebel was dead, she was eaten by dogs. How are we using our power? For good things or our selfish ambition?

  • Delilah (Judges 16)

Delilah was a beautiful woman from the Philistines who tempted Samson and led to his arrest. She betrayed Samson, who loved her truly. Because of her, God left him. Let us ponder if we are faithful to God and His people, or if we cause the fall of God’s people.

  • Potiphar's wife (Genesis 39:5-20)

She yearned for Joseph's company, for the companionship of a handsome man. Joseph was tempted. When that didn't happen, she lied and blamed Joseph. We should not desire worldly pleasures or power. We must learn to please God and desire heavenly things.

  • Lot's wife (Genesis 19:26)

Abraham's nephew is Lot. His wife came from a God-fearing family, but she disobeyed the Lord. God commanded them to run to the mountains and not look back to witness Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed. If they turn back, God says they will become salt. When Lot's family was fleeing the destruction, Lot's wife turned to glimpse the destruction and instantly transformed into a salt pillar. We must learn to obey God in all circumstances and to let go of the things that God has told us to let go of.

The Bible says in II Corinthians 12:9 that His grace is sufficient for us. Are you rejected by your family, friends, or at work, or facing sickness, financial crisis, or relationship problems? Don’t be discouraged. Give every to God cause he knows all your pains and will heal you. Be loyal to God, and let’s use our talents, knowledge, and everything for God’s glory alone.
